Getting started

How your support begins

  1. Step 1

    Parents get in touch

You briefly describe the situation and we arrange a first meeting.

  2. Step 2

    Parent meeting

First without your child: we talk about development, daily life and your questions.

  3. Step 3

    Getting to know your child

Your child gets to know us through play. Tests follow at a child-friendly pace if needed.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can't find your question? Feel free to give us a call.

Does my child need a referral?

Not for counselling or treatment. For clinical psychological assessment covered by public insurance you need a referral from a paediatrician, GP or child and adolescent psychiatrist.

Will we as parents find out what our child says?

We keep you informed about progress and our recommendations. What children, and especially teenagers, say in confidence stays in the room – unless their safety is at stake. We agree on this with everyone at the start.

How do I prepare my child for the first appointment?

Explain honestly and simply that you are visiting someone who helps children when something is hard. We play and talk – nobody gets examined or given an injection.

From what age can my child come?

We work with children from about three years old and teenagers up to 18. With toddlers we mainly work with the parents.

Psychologist, psychotherapist or psychiatrist – who can help my child?

Clinical psychologists assess and provide focused treatment. Psychotherapists often work with families for longer. Child and adolescent psychiatrists are medical doctors and can prescribe medication. We work closely with all of them and refer on when needed.

How long is the wait for an appointment?

Usually no more than three weeks for a parent meeting. In an acute crisis children and teenagers can call the Rat auf Draht helpline on 147, day and night.

Ready for the first step?
